Diwali 2017

On Monday the children came back from assembly to find something beautiful left on the floor....

Who could it be from?

"It's the fairies because there is lights"
"It's magic"
"There's a letter..."

The children watched a short video clip of Jessica and her family explaining what Diwali is and how Hindu's celebrate the festival.  This helped them to identify some of the objects on the floor and excited the children to want to make Diva lamps and Rangoli patterns. Some children took their learning outdoors and used the chalk to create beautiful Rangoli patterns whilst others chose to colour or paint pictures.

The children enjoyed painting the Rangoli patterns whilst also exploring what happens when they mix colours.

What is a Sari?

The children tried on the colourful sari's and even had a go at making their own using the material. Some girls pretended to dance to some music; therefore, their interests were followed and the boom box was taken outside. The children enjoyed dancing to the Diwali music and decided to use the material as a prop.

Following simple instructions

The children used the 'Salt Dough Recipe' to make a Diva lamp. They worked with a friend to read the instructions and used the pictures to help them measure the correct amount. From this, they then took it in turns to squish the dough which encouraged language such as 'squishy, stretchy, sticky and cold'.
