Lucky Dip

This week the children were presented with some music and sounds from a clip called 'The Lucky Dip'. The children listened to the clip twice and they were asked to think of what noises they could hear and what they thought it could be. The children were also asked to think of the setting and what it might look like. They then drew some fantastic pictures.....

"I heard bubbles with a fish."
"I heard some lightening."
"There is a fish jumping up to the shark to eat him because I heard some glug, glug, glug bubbles coming up."
"I drew fireworks because I heard banging. I drew seagulls because I heard seagull noises. I drew bubbles because I heard popping noises. I drew a fairy because I thought that was making the noises."
"I drew the seaside because I heard the sea. I drew fireworks because I heard them."
"It's a forest. I heard loads of birdies and I heard fairies looking at an alien. The alien made a pop."
"I think it was at a show because it sounded like there were fireworks at the show. A man was doing something in the castle because I heard a bang noise, maybe he was cooking and he was burning it."
"Thats a boat, a big one because it goes on sea. I got fishes, they pop. I got seagulls too."
"I heard birds with cherries because I heard birds and birds love cherries. I drew a man making footprints on the log."
"I've drawn a bird and a nest because thats what I was thinking about when I heard birds."
"That's the angel going to fly to the beach and the fish is swimming and went the wrong way. There is bubbles popping from the bubble machine."
"I drew fireworks because I heard banging. I drew a fish and a dolphin in the sea popping bubbles."
"I think there was a boat sailing off and there was a magnetic sound. I think the dog runned over some tin and I heard a tweet, tweet, tweet."
"It's at the beach because there's some noise like seagulls and seagulls live at the beach. These are the electricities."
"Dog, house, sunshine, bubbles."
"I drew a parrot because I heard a parrot noise. I heard some grass swishing. I heard a seagull, fireworks and a car."

The children shared their ideas which generated a class debate. They then watched the film in sections and we discussed the setting, where the music was coming from and the different noises. The children also spoke about what they saw, and thought:
"The girl is making a bad choice because she left her parents" T.B
"She stole the teddy and will go to prison" K.E
"She wants the teddy" S.S
"How did the man do that?" (getting the girl back up onto the pier) SS
"Why did he run away?" T.B
"That man is bad" I.P
"No he's not, he helped her" I.C

The children then decided to use this as a theme for their imaginary play. The boys wanted to make a police station outside and used the masking tape to create bars at the windows. One child then drew a picture of the man who they thought was bad in the story. They drew the pins in his head and wrote the word "bad" (M.C/T.B).

From this, the children wanted to make policeman hats and engaged in role-play., taking on a role and making up their own ideas and narratives.
